Camp Counselor: Internship

$320 - $400 / Weekly

POSITION SUMMARY:
Camp Counselors are the heart and soul of mentorship, caregiving, and supervision of campers while at Camp Erdman. Broadly speaking the responsibilities include, but are not limited to, looking after the safety and well-being of up to 14 kids, ensuring camper safety, and running activities for campers throughout the week. This position will require you to lead a variety of activities and programs as set out in the Camp Erdman program schedule. The Camp Counselor will fill the roles of friend, mentor and role model for all campers. This job requires constant 24 hour supervision of campers beginning at Sunday afternoon check - in through Friday afternoon check-out. The Camp Counselor must have a thorough understanding of the YMCA’s mission and goals, and a desire to work with children between the ages of 5 and 17. Leadership skills, enthusiasm, patience, a sense of humor and self-control are all essential. Person must have the ability to provide fun and innovative programs to youth. These programs will be a combination of directed programs in the areas of arts & crafts, aquatics, sports, team building, hiking, and self-directed programs such as group games, campfires, camp out and other activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Child Development:
- Be a role model for & develop positive meaningful relationships with youth.
- Provide children with the opportunities to make new friends and learn new activities.
- Be concerned with camper development & growth.
- Be aware of health and safety concerns.
- Recognize and respond to opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success.
- Ensure that each and every camper is included in the group.
- Ensure that Camp Erdman is a positive and memorable experience instilling a strong desire to return in every camper.
- Ensure that children are always supervised.
- Attend staff trainings and meetings.
Programming:
- Provide innovative and fun programming for your group of campers including leading skill tracks and supporting program staff during cabin times.
- Operate your program within the Camp Erdman schedule.
- Use good judgment when leading activities.
- Foster a sense of ownership in programs and facilities.
- Other duties as required that pertain to the operation of a summer camp.
- Leading a group of children on an overnight tent camping experience
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferred Qualifications
- Two years of college education preferred
- Prior summer camp experience preferred
- Prior experience leading peers preferred
- Lifeguard Certification preferred
- Ropes Certification preferred
- Bus Driver Certification preferred
- Must be a College student
- Experience working with children
- CPR/AED and First Aid required
- TB test required
- Ability to be physically active all day
