POSITION SUMMARY:
To assist the camp nurse in all aspects of camp healthcare. This includes, but is not limited to, checking in campers on check-in days, staying on top of campers health needs and medication distribution, and general health center organization and supply management. The Nurse Assistant does not live in a cabin with resident campers, but is expected to start their day at 7:30am at the start of Morning Oli with the rest of summer camp. It is also expected that they would be willing to move in with resident camp campers or assist camp in any way if we were to be short-staffed for any reason.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Follow established system for health screening for arriving campers and staff including checking for head lice.
- Follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medicine waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders.
- Participate in specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety, first aid, and use of universal precautions for infection control.
- Make copies of routine safety and first aid procedures available to the staff.
- Assist the Camp Nurse in distributing daily medications and communicate health call times to campers and staff. Medications can only be distributed under Nurse’s supervision.
- Care for sick campers who are being transported off site for medical care
- File accident/incident reports that can be used for risk-management assessment.
- Assist camp counselors in filing accident/incident reports
- On the arrival day collect drugs, medicines, and first aid kits brought by campers and under the supervision of the nurse administer them as prescribed.
- Establish and carry out a regular program of cleaning and housekeeping to maintain a well-kept health facility.
- Prepare and maintain first aid kits for camp staff and activity areas.
- Monitor the health of all camp staff.
- These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned and other duties may be assigned as required.
- Must be able to lift/assist campers or staff; read prescriptions and health exams from physicians; get to remote locations on camp property quickly, use telephone; observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions of camp
QUALIFICATIONS:
- In last year of nursing school preferred
- Advanced first aid or medical training preferred
- Experienced with children and young adults desirable
- Ability to originate, update, and/or monitor health care, maintain records, and implement the health care plan.
- Desire to work and live in a camp community
- CPR/AED & First Aid required
- TB test required
- Drug test required Random after the first test
- Current Driver’s License
- Clear drivers history report
- Pass the YMCA bus or van certification class
